That’ll teach me

I had a rather disturbing morning.  You know, the type of thing that causes you to shiver, like the first time you heard one of your parents talk about sex or something?

Yeah, so this one is right up those lines.

My sister, calls me up, first thing this morning so that I can part-take in sharing of this.

She tells me, “I just got a labret piercing [center lower lip] this weekend and you want to know what mom said in response to seeing this?  “That reminds me of a ‘flava-saver’ [a/k/a 'soul patch'] on a guy.”"

DAH!!!  That is completely wrong, on so many levels.

Apparently, this is all my fault, as my mother had over heard a conversation between myself and my brother some time ago, and had heard the term, and asked what it was, and I obliged with giving the uncomfortable answer.

This’ll teach me to keep my mouth shut, or at least to look around before I speak!

Eclipse’s Graphical Modeling Framework

Okay, so I’ve been on a new project, and I have to build a program to create pipeflow models, everything from common pipes, Elbow joints, T-joints to ports, discreet changes, etc. Fun stuff.

So mucking around with GMF for the past 10 months has proved annoying. Don’t get me wrong, I see a lot of pentential for it, but finding documentation or tutorials on how to pull the programming/API model together with the graphical end of things is hard as hell, and if you do find something, it’s sparse (and that’s generous).

I got a pretty damn good diagram editor up and running… of course the people (within the company) we’re developing it for are going to have a laundry list of stuff they want cuz they never gave us a design document. This was just supposed to be a project with a pot of money to see how far we could get with developing our own tool instead of paying $10k/month for some third party software.

Take a look:

Work has once again consumed my life.  Fuck.

Poker Etiquette

Of the places I play poker, there is one relatively new player (for about a month now) who has horrendous manners at the table… The type of person you’d like to strangle just for their overall mannerisms and conduct. Such as a very derisive laugh when she wins, and a loud whoop when she or a friend of her’s wins against someone else.

Having been playing consistently for over a month, she still fucks up when betting (like not meeting the minimum). A bit of a calling station, quite a donkey and bad player. E.g. I was in late position, so I decided to steal the blinds (and her call) with 5000 and A-6. She calls (early position) it with K-7 o/s, and gets a K on the turn. I was favored 3-2 pre-flop, then 3-1 before the turn.
So my advice to anyone playing poker, don’t be a donkey. Read some etiquette rules here

Poker… Night of bad-beats, donkey’s paradise

So I was in a tourney the other night, rather insane cards and hands.
Session 1, before the first blind increment:

  • Kc-As-7s; Ks; Kd. I have: Qs-9s (nut-flush). Opponent: Ad-7d (full-house)
  • 6-8-9 (rainbow); Th (10 of hearts); Js. I have: 7d-5d (low straight, big blind). Opponent: K-Q
  • 2d-3h-8s; J; 5. I have 3d-3s (all-in after the flop). Opponent: A-4 (donkey)
  • There were at least 2 other full houses too! It was nuts.

Session 2:

  • 10’s were coming up like mad. There were two hands back-to-back that had 10 paired on the board. A third hand after that had another person win with pocket 10’s.
  • Short-stacked, one raiser, and one all-in (less than raiser) in front of me, I went all in with Qd-Td (10’s were going so well that game, I figured what the hell). Raiser calls with A-J o/s, all-in has A-K o/s. Flop: T-8-4; J; T. A bit donkey-ish of me.

AppleTV to kill TiVo and DVR services?

http://blogs.zdnet.com/web2explorer/?p=301

Interesting article, albeit he left out one factor in tallying up price over two years, cost of high-speed internet… figure $40/mo ($480/yr.), $50/mo. if you drop cable.  Most cable providers add $10 per/mo if you have only internet.

So if I dropped cable and went with AppleTV, internet access and a few choice shows:

  • AppleTV: $299
  • Internet ($50/mo): $600
  • BattleStar Galactica: $35
  • Grey’s Anatomy: $35
  • The Unit: $35 (N/A on iTunes)
  • Heroes: $43
  • Crossing Jordan: $35 (N/A on iTunes)
  • Lost: $35
  • Daily Show: $40
  • House: $35 (N/A on iTunes)
  • Rescue Me: $35 (N/A on iTunes)
  • Blade (the Series): $35 (N/A on iTunes)
  • UFC / The Ultimate Fighter on Spike!: $45 (N/A on iTunes)
  • Law & Order: $36
  • Law & Order, SVU: $36

Well, iTunes doesn’t have everything on it yet, but maybe it will sometime soon, then I just may dump cable.  I most definitely will dump cable if I can get these in DVD quality (right now the recordings on iTunes are just below DVD quality).  I rarely watch live TV anyway…

Someday soon…

But there’s a few issues that need to be addressed:

  • Re-downloading lost/corrupted videos
  • How to get people hooked on new shows?:  Free pilot episodes.
  • iTunes needs a free channel for show pilots, who says the idiots in Hollywood know what we like to watch?  E.g. Showtime dumping “Dead Like Me” (9.1/10 on imdb.com)

Pretty soon producers (the non-”for XXXXXX channel” people) will probably start going straight to Apple iTunes.
